Introducing Tim Hanson, Greater Manchester Police Federation’s new Secretary
Q: You were Deputy Secretary for three years before becoming Secretary – why did you want to go for the role?
A: I really wanted to take full responsibility for ensuring that we continue to provide excellent representation for members, remain effective in influencing and negotiating, and that we support our members on issues that matter. For the past three years my role has involved supporting poorly and injured officers, whilst also performing a lot of the role of secretary whilst deputising for Neil Clarke. I’ve gained invaluable skills and experience that I hope will prepare me for this role.
Q: Tell us a bit about your policing career?
A: I’ve been a police officer for 24 years – 10 years in uniform, 10 years as a detective and four years on the Federation Branch Board. I’ve been a Fed Rep since 2018, and the Branch Detective Lead since April 2021, before becoming Deputy Secretary in 2022.
Q: Why is the Secretary role so important?
A: There are huge challenges for the Federation in the coming years and we need to stay relevant and fit for purpose. I hope to build on the foundations the branch has laid by ensuring we continue to learn and evolve. I’m committed to the core values of fairness, transparency and accountability.
Q: What are your main goals in the role?
A: I’ve got three main priorities as Secretary. The first is to ensure that our Federation Reps are supported, feel valued, and are trained to do the vital work they do. Then I will engage with the force and all stakeholders, so we can achieve the best possible working conditions for our members. And, above all, I want to be an effective leader for our Federation Reps and our members.
Q: What’s your message to Greater Manchester Police Federation Reps?
A: The work that we do matters – and now more than ever we need to work together as a board and a branch to support our members. As your Secretary, I will do everything I can to set the tone for this and make GMPF a rewarding and effective branch.
